Paddy was born in the Middle East and grew up in the UK.

After attending art college in London, he lived in New York, where for some years he was an assistant to an abstract painter.

Back in the UK, he worked as an artist for ten years, before turning to journalism. He has since written for the Guardian, Observer, Telegraph and Independent.

In 2005, he retrained as a psychotherapist at the University of East London, and is now in private practice in Devon, where he lives close to his two grown-up daughters.
